Thousands across California are set to receive unexpected news that will bring significant relief. Over a quarter of a million residents will be informed that their medical debt has been entirely cleared, thanks to Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel and his wife, supermodel Miranda Kerr. The couple collaborated with the nonprofit Undue Medical Debt to remove more than $500 million in unpaid medical expenses, providing families the opportunity to continue without financial burdens.

In a video message, Spiegel and Kerr discussed their initiative, clarifying that the letters recipients will find in their mailboxes are indeed genuine.

“If you happen to receive a letter in the mail letting you know that your medical debt has been forgiven, we want you to know, it’s real,” Kerr emphasized.

Medical debt often persists after recovery, causing stress during crucial periods of healing. Spiegel highlighted how such financial burdens can linger long after a health crisis.

“When someone you love is sick, all you want to do is focus on helping them get better,” Kerr stated. “That’s why we wanted to support this effort and help relieve medical debt, so families can focus on caring for their loved ones and really supporting their healing.”

Remarkably, the process for beneficiaries is straightforward. There is no application process; recipients will merely receive a notification that their qualifying medical debt has been wiped out.

The couple took this opportunity to acknowledge Undue Medical Debt, a nonprofit dedicated to purchasing and abolishing medical debt since 2014.

In her message to the beneficiaries, Kerr shared her heartfelt sentiments.

“To everyone whose debt is being relieved through this effort, we’re sending you and your loved ones so much love,” she conveyed.

Spiegel hopes that this gesture provides “a little peace of mind and allows you to focus on what matters the most.”
