Skylark Meats Plant in Omaha to Close, Over 200 Jobs Affected

Omaha meat processing plant announces plans to close

Closure of Omaha Meat Plant Marks Another Hit to Nebraska’s Food Processing Industry

The meat processing industry in Nebraska is witnessing another significant shutdown. American Foods Group has declared the impending closure of its Skylark Meats facility located in Omaha, set to cease operations by August 25.

An official filing with the Nebraska Department of Labor has revealed that this closure will lead to the loss of over 200 jobs. Skylark Meats has been known for producing a range of beef and pork products. Although the company described the decision as “difficult,” no explicit reason was provided for shutting down the plant at 4430 South 110th St.

American Foods Group operates several other processing facilities, including a slaughter and packing plant in Gibbon. In correspondence with the Labor Department, the company mentioned that it is encouraging the affected workers to consider employment opportunities at its other locations.

This development follows closely on the heels of Tyson Foods’ earlier decision to close its meat processing plant in Lexington, which resulted in the loss of over 3,000 jobs. Additionally, the food manufacturing sector in Omaha is facing another wave of layoffs, with WK Kellogg laying off over 450 employees during July and August.
