Protecting Pets from Summer Heat: Essential Tips for Pet Owners

As temperatures rise, it’s not just humans who feel the heat—our pets do too. Ensuring the safety and comfort of your furry companions during the hot summer months is crucial. Nayla Garcia from the SPCA of Northern Nevada offers valuable advice on how to keep your pets safe when outdoors.

Garcia emphasizes the importance of choosing grassy areas for walks with dogs during the hottest parts of the day and ensuring they have access to plenty of water. For cat owners, she warns that trendy bubble-shaped carriers can trap heat. “If your cat is in one of those bubble-shaped carriers, it can be at least 10 degrees hotter inside. So, make sure your cat isn’t at risk of heatstroke,” Garcia advises.

While dog boots may seem like a good idea to protect paws from hot surfaces, they can inadvertently cause harm. “The boots might prevent paw burns, but they can also lead to overheating. If it’s 100 degrees outside, even if their paws are protected, you’ve taken away one of their ways to sweat,” she explains.

Another critical consideration is never leaving pets unattended in vehicles, as the interior can become significantly hotter than the outside temperature. In Nevada, leaving pets in extreme weather conditions inside vehicles is illegal, as per NRS 202.485.

Reno police officer Hunter Mercurio warns, “Violators of this law could face up to six months in jail or a fine of up to a thousand dollars.” If you see an animal left in a car, you should immediately call 911 or contact Washoe County Regional Animal Services at 775-322-3647.

Mercurio adds, “If you see a dog in danger inside a hot car, this law also protects citizens who need to break a window to rescue an animal. Be mindful of electric vehicles in these situations.”

Keep these precautions in mind to ensure your pets’ well-being—your furry friends will be grateful for your care and attention.
