Early in the morning, a passerby noticed a cat precariously floating on a piece of ice about 30-40 feet from shore near Fletcher Lane and alerted authorities. The ice was cracking beneath Tiki, leaving only his head above water.
Before police arrived, Kris and Nate, two residents working from home, took swift action. Nate used a rowboat and a shovel to navigate the hazardous ice, following Kris’s guidance from shore.
In a race against time, Nate successfully pulled Tiki from the lake, bringing him to safety.
When animal control arrived, Tiki was lethargic and in shock, with a body temperature too low to register. He was rushed to a veterinary clinic, where his resilience stunned everyone.
Later, Tiki’s owners reached out to animal control after recognizing him in a rescue post.
“This afternoon a resident from Birch Rd reached out stating they thought this may be their cat Tiki who had gotten out last night or early this morning,” Westford Animal Control shared on social media. “They were able to positively identify him and then informed us that Tiki is not only 20 YEARS OLD but is also BLIND!”
It is believed that Tiki may have escaped after being chased by a predator onto the ice the previous night.
Now, Tiki is safely back home, recovering warmly with his family.
