Michigan Program Offers Rent-Free Homes to Retain Early Educators

Battle Creek tries a new benefit for early childhood educators: rent-free housing

Michigan Educators Benefit from Innovative Rent-Free Housing Initiative

In a groundbreaking move to support early childhood educators, two teachers in Michigan have begun residing in a new home without the burden of rent. This initiative comes as part of a larger national effort to provide educators with rent-free housing as a way to bolster retention and attraction within the preschool teaching profession.

Community members and supporters gathered in Battle Creek on Monday to celebrate the opening of a duplex that will house educators rent-free. This property is a pivotal part of an initiative designed to assist early childhood educators like Haylee Fettes, who, along with her sons, is moving into the duplex. Fettes expressed that the rent-free arrangement will significantly ease her financial stress, allowing her to focus on her passion for teaching. “Just being able to breathe, live, work, and not think about the money,” she shared.

The First Home, First Teacher project, which originated in New Haven, Connecticut, is expanding its reach with the Battle Creek duplex marking a significant milestone. Caroline Smith, the Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer at the Friends Center for Children, noted that while many similar programs tie housing to specific childcare centers, the Battle Creek initiative aims for a broader impact. It plans to offer city-wide housing options, ensuring educators can change workplaces without losing their homes.

Retention and recruitment of early childhood educators pose a challenge in Michigan and nationwide. As of 2025, approximately 9,000 early childcare teaching positions remained unfilled in Michigan, according to a report by Michigan State University, citing low wages as a primary factor.

Hoping to address this issue, key organizations including Community Action, the United Way, the Battle Creek Community Foundation, Neighborhoods Inc., and Pulse are leading the First Home, First Teacher initiative in Battle Creek. Their collaborative efforts aim to make a significant difference in the lives of educators and the communities they serve.
