Wisconsin’s New Indie Bookstore Adventure: A Statewide Quest
A fresh initiative is taking shape in Wisconsin, inspired by the success of a similar venture in Iowa. The state will soon host its own Indie Bookshop Quest, bringing together bookstores from across the region to offer a unique literary experience.
Keith Burrows, who co-owns the Republic of Letters bookstore in Mineral Point, was inspired after attending a booksellers’ conference last fall. “A couple of Iowa bookstores convinced me that we should have one in Wisconsin,” Burrows shared on WPR’s “Wisconsin Today.” Motivated by their enthusiasm, Burrows connected with fellow bookstore owners to organize the event.
The Indie Bookshop Quest 2026 aims to unite 35 bookstores across Wisconsin in a month-long event. Participants will engage in a “bookstore crawl” using maps that feature missions and clues to solve in each store.
Celebrating Wisconsin’s Bookstores
Burrows expressed that the quest is about highlighting the diversity of independent bookstores. Each store offers a unique blend of books, events, and community involvement. For instance, his store shares its space with The Book Kitchen, a cooking school that hosts classes with cookbook authors. Other participating stores include WanderLust, a mobile romance bookstore, and Leopold’s, which doubles as a bar and café.
The Quests and Their Impact
The quests are designed to be interactive and engaging. Participants might meet bookstore pets or ask for book recommendations, fostering interaction with staff and the local community. This approach aims to make the quest more than just a checklist but rather a rewarding experience with prizes.
The Role of Indie Bookstores
Burrows sees bookstores as community hubs, offering recommendations not just for books, but also for local dining and activities. “I think bookstores are often the heart of our community,” he remarked. They serve as meeting places and conversation starters, acting as bridges within the community.
Challenges and Opportunities for Bookstores
Wisconsin is home to 77 independent bookstores affiliated with the Midwest Independent Booksellers Association. Despite challenges like inflation and competition with major retailers, Burrows remains optimistic about the industry’s future, noting a recent surge in new bookstore openings.
Even in small communities, bookstores thrive by offering a personal, ad-free experience that stands out in today’s digital age. “Books are not a new idea,” Burrows stated, emphasizing the timeless appeal of physical books and the intimate setting that indie bookstores provide.
