Clarke County Seniors Thrive with Innovative Financial Literacy Program
In an unprecedented educational development, high school seniors in Clarke County are not only learning about financial literacy but also graduating with tangible investment experience. This initiative, known as the Gifted Savings program, has already seen success with nearly 650 students from the district’s high schools participating.
The Gifted Savings program provides each graduating senior with a $1,000 investment portfolio at the beginning of their final school year. This unique approach allows students to engage with actual financial assets, offering a hands-on learning experience. Upon completion of the program and reaching the age of 18, students gain full ownership of their portfolios, giving them the choice to either reinvest their funds or withdraw them.
This pioneering initiative is the first of its kind in the country and involves students from Cedar Shoals, Clarke Central, and Classic City High School. It sets a new standard for incorporating practical financial education into the high school curriculum.
Dr. Jennifer Scott, the anticipated new superintendent of Clarke County School District (CCSD), expressed enthusiasm for continuing the program, stating that the district looks forward to welcoming the next cohort of seniors. The program is set to continue into the next academic year, offering more students the opportunity to gain valuable financial skills.
