In Moncton, Canada, a remarkable initiative has been making summer memorable for children who might not otherwise have the means to experience the simple joy of cycling. Since its inception 14 years ago, Krista Richard’s program, Bikes and Trikes for Everyone, has been providing free bicycles to children in need.

Krista Richard, the driving force behind this community effort, has dedicated herself to collecting, repairing, and giving away bikes. Her generous acts have connected thousands of young individuals with the joy of cycling, enabling them to explore outdoors, forge friendships, and create cherished memories.

This year, Richard surpassed her personal best, distributing 88 bicycles in a single day. The previous year, the program saw over 400 bikes successfully find new riders.

Richard emphasizes the broader impact of biking, noting its potential to strengthen neighborhood bonds. In her conversation with the CBC, she explained, “With all these video games, there’s no social contact and people don’t know who their neighbors are anymore. But if you get a bunch of kids on their bike, then they get to know each other and then the families get to know each other. I think the more time you spend outside the better.”

The initiative continues to gain interest, with more than 400 children currently awaiting the chance to own a bicycle.

For Richard, the most rewarding part of her work is witnessing the pure delight on children’s faces. She fondly recounted, “I had one little boy… he got on it and he didn’t want to go home. Every time he’d go by me, he would say, ‘You do good job, you do good job.’”
