North Carolina Museum of Art Finds Temporary Home in Downtown Winston-Salem

The North Carolina Museum of Art is making a temporary move to downtown Winston-Salem, while its permanent location in Buena Vista undergoes renovations. This new venue on 4th Street situates the museum within the bustling entertainment and business district, not far from its original site as an artist-run gallery 70 years ago. Starting this summer, the museum plans to offer a variety of creative programs, including outdoor concerts, vinyl nights, and exhibitions.

One of the first exhibits, titled “Unboxed,” will showcase artists from North Carolina who have participated in the museum’s Portable Gallery program. According to Associate Director Devon Mackay, “We started to commission contemporary work from great artists in North Carolina to bring into the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system. We now take it to surrounding counties. And so it’s about 13 artists, and it’s all different types of mediums, different parts of North Carolina. There’ll definitely be a few of your favorites there, but also people you have never heard of before.”

The North Carolina Museum of Art is set to open its downtown Winston-Salem location on July 16th, offering visitors a chance to engage with the local art scene and discover new talents.
