Runoff Election Imminent for Athens-Clarke County Mayoral Race

Residents of Athens-Clarke County will have to exercise patience as the decision on their next Mayor is postponed by several weeks. The race, which remains undecided, will see Tim Denson and Dexter Fisher compete in a runoff election.

Current Mayor Kelly Girtz’s successor couldn’t be determined in the initial election. As per the data from the Georgia Secretary of State’s Election Data Hub, Denson secured almost 38% of the votes, narrowly leading Fisher, who garnered 27%. LaKeisha Gantt captured nearly 22% of the vote, while Mara Zuniga and Sharon Miller received approximately 12% and under 2%, respectively.

County Commission Races See Mixed Outcomes

In other local election results, the incumbents Patrick Davenport and Tiffany Taylor successfully retained their County Commission seats. In District 5, Kimberly Bennet and Craig Topple will also head to a runoff. Meanwhile, Ed Tolley has secured the District 7 seat, as John Culpepper steps down. The District 9 incumbent, Ovita Thornton, will face a significant challenge from Tracy Smith in the forthcoming election.
