Teacher in Arkansas Adopts Former Student, Creating a Forever Family

A serendipitous encounter in a second grade classroom in Bentonville, Arkansas, changed the lives of a teacher and a foster child forever. The story begins with the lively and imaginative 7-year-old Mary, who captured the attention of her teacher, Lexi McClelland, at Elm Tree Elementary School.
Mary, known for her humor and love for reading, stood out with her creativity. “She was naturally funny and incredibly creative,” McClelland recalled. Despite Mary’s challenging journey through the foster care system, her bright personality shone in the classroom, where she dreamt up inventions and even designed a book trolley system.
McClelland felt a unique connection to Mary, even with limited knowledge of her past. “It felt like God led it,” she expressed. “Like she was meant to be in my life.”
As the school year concluded, Mary was set to be adopted. However, when those plans fell through, McClelland and her husband, Max, didn’t hesitate to offer Mary a home. “If she’s available, she is coming to our house,” McClelland remembered asserting.
Mary moved in with the McClellands shortly after, carrying only a few possessions. The transition felt seamless, as Mary herself noted, “As soon as I walked in, I was like… ‘Let’s have some fun.’”
By Christmas Eve 2021, the couple decided to make the arrangement permanent, gifting Mary a book accompanied by a note inviting her to join their family officially. Initially stunned by the gesture, Mary finally accepted the reality of her new family.
On April 7, 2022, surrounded by emotional supporters, the adoption was finalized in court, with Mary even given the honor of using the judge’s gavel. “There wasn’t a dry eye in the room,” Max reflected.
Today, at age 12, Mary is thriving in middle school, nurturing her love for books and humor. Her relationship with Lexi often draws parallels to the characters Matilda and Miss Honey, a comparison they both cherish. The family has since grown with the addition of a baby boy, Murphy, whom Mary adores as a big sister.
“He’s obsessed with her,” McClelland shared. “And she’s obsessed with him.”
