Jennifer Mnookin Reflects on Her Tenure as UW-Madison Chancellor

As Jennifer Mnookin prepares to leave her position as Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she takes a moment to reflect on the achievements and challenges faced during her leadership. Her tenure will conclude this Friday, making way for her new role as president of Columbia University starting July 1.

In a discussion with Wisconsin reporters at Bascom Hall, Mnookin emphasized the value of welcoming diverse perspectives to foster pluralism and free expression at UW-Madison. “While you can be a fierce advocate for what you believe, you should also bring curiosity to conversations with people who may not see the world exactly as you do,” Mnookin remarked. “Often you have something to learn from people who don’t exactly share your point of view.”

Academic and Research Milestones

Mnookin’s leadership marked UW-Madison’s return to prominence in research, recapturing the fifth spot in national rankings for university research expenditures as recorded by the National Science Foundation’s Higher Education Research and Development Survey. The university’s research investments hit a notable $1.93 billion in 2024.

Efforts to increase accessibility were also a focus, with initiatives like Bucky’s Pell Pathway and Bucky’s Tuition Promise enhancing financial support for in-state students. Mnookin stated, “I don’t feel like any of these accomplishments belong to me or me personally. I think they’re all very much collective, and I think this is a place that works together effectively.” Presently, about two-thirds of undergraduate students graduate debt-free.

Challenges Within the UW System

Mnookin addressed the systemic challenges, citing the complex governance structure of the Universities of Wisconsin System as a barrier to innovation. The university operates under state agency rules, which can limit its flexibility. “We need accountability. We need guardrails,” she commented, acknowledging the constraints imposed by state oversight and the lack of bonding authority.

Despite these hurdles, Mnookin expressed a preference for maintaining UW-Madison within the system, while noting that “just like in any family, there’s times when you sort of think you’d like to be able to spread your wings a little bit.”

Efforts and Setbacks for Black Student Initiatives

In response to calls for action following student protests and a racist incident in 2023, Mnookin convened a committee to address challenges faced by Black students. Although progress has been slow, she remarked, “That hit at a perfect storm moment,” indicating the complexity of implementing change amidst administrative and federal shifts.

Handling Controversy and Conflict

Mnookin’s tenure also witnessed significant challenges like legislative demands to cut DEI programs and student protests related to the Gaza conflict. Reflecting on these events, she described a particularly difficult week as “one of the toughest weeks of my academic life,” yet expressed satisfaction with the university’s balanced approach to complex issues.
