Mayoral Candidates Discuss Key Issues at Packed Athens Debate
The Athens Regional Library’s Appleton Auditorium became a hub of political discussion on Monday evening, drawing over 150 attendees for the WUGA-hosted mayoral debate. The event saw a full house, with many community members standing to listen to the candidates’ views on pressing local matters.
Among the attendees was Stige Burden, who sought clarity on the candidates’ positions regarding affordable housing, data centers, and urban development. “But outside of that, I thought it flowed,” Burden mentioned. “I was glad this was my first one that I attended. So I got a lot of valuable information and insight into the candidates’ platforms.”
Rob Woolery, another resident, raised concerns about property taxes and their allocation. “I want to know what our tax dollars are going for,” Woolery expressed. “That’s all. I don’t, I’m tired of funding programs for people that aren’t putting anything into the game. Everybody needs to put some skin in the game. Some of us are putting more. I don’t mind putting my fair share, but I want it to be fair.”
The debate featured Tim Denson, Dextor Fisher, LaKeisha Gantt, Sharon Miller, and Mara Zuniga, who are all competing to succeed current Mayor Kelly Girtz. The election is set for May 19th, and the successful candidate will assume office in January 2027.
