Kathy Durham Steps Forward with a Mission to Revitalize Democracy and Address Economic Challenges
In an unexpected move, Kathy Durham, a devoted educator with a rich history of teaching about democracy, announces her candidacy for Congress. Driven by a deep concern for the current state of democracy, which she describes as “hanging on by a thread,” Durham believes it’s crucial to have a teacher’s voice in the legislative process.
Durham highlights her unique candidacy by emphasizing her rural background. “We have never had a rural candidate before,” she states, explaining that her lifelong experience as a public servant and her comprehensive understanding of the rules position her as an ideal candidate for Nevada’s Congressional District 2. Her goal is to bridge the gap between rural and urban communities, aiming to flip the district from red to blue.
Tackling Economic Affordability: A Priority
Durham identifies economic affordability as the primary issue confronting her district. She underscores the struggles faced by constituents across both urban and rural areas, whether it’s affording basic necessities like fuel and housing or having disposable income after bills are paid. To address these challenges, she advocates for reversing tax cuts benefiting the wealthy, reflecting her “people over profits” ethos.
Drawing parallels with the Gilded Age, Durham criticizes the consolidation of industries, particularly in healthcare, where few corporations exert control over insurance and medical services. Her approach prioritizes communities over corporate interests, with an overarching focus on safeguarding democracy.
Connecting with Diverse Communities Across the District
Having resided in the district for 26 years, Durham emphasizes her deep connection and commitment to understanding local concerns. Balancing her full-time teaching role with campaigning, she dedicates her evenings and weekends to visiting various communities. “I may not be wealthy and I may not be well connected, but I have the passion,” she asserts, highlighting her readiness to serve with dedication and hard work.
