In an exciting turn of events, Austin managed to level the match by clinching the second set with a narrow 26-24 victory. This set the stage for a gripping encounter as the teams battled for supremacy. Austin maintained control in the third set, pulling ahead with a 25-19 win, gaining a 2-1 edge.

The fourth set saw a fierce competition, with both teams exchanging leads. Nebraska eventually surged ahead to win 25-22, pushing the match to a decisive fifth set. However, Austin established a commanding lead midway through the final set and secured a 15-10 victory, marking a triumphant end to the match.

Inspiration and Reflections from a Volleyball Legend

Among the spectators was volleyball enthusiast Grant Vadnais from Lincoln, who found inspiration in Larson’s performance. “I watched a lot of volleyball as a kid, and that’s inspired me to become like a player, which I have, and it’s pretty cool,” Vadnais shared.

Reflecting on her return to Nebraska for her final match, Larson, who hails from Hooper, Nebraska, fondly recalled her childhood memories, particularly the ice cream from Mines’ Drug Store. “They always had ice cream. Every time after school I’d be walking to my babysitter’s house, and always stop for ice cream, 25 cents,” she reminisced. “And everybody was just so excited to see you.”

Advice and Gratitude from a Storied Career

Larson offered insights into her journey, emphasizing the challenges she faced both on and off the court. “There’s a lot of gratitude on the volleyball side, a lot of gratitude in life as well,” she noted. “But it hasn’t been easy. And if you think success is linear, it’s absolutely not.”

Lexi Rodriguez, LOVB Nebraska libero, reflected on her experience being coached by Larson when she served as an assistant at NU. “But I think my favorite part was just getting to know you as a person and call you a friend,” Rodriguez expressed. “I think that’s really cool. Younger me would have never imagined being friends with the four-time Olympian. The mentorship and the leadership and the friendship, I think I’ll carry with me forever.”

Emotional Tributes and Legacy

Former Husker Madi Banks (Kubik) expressed her gratitude for Larson’s mentorship. A video shown at the end of the match, featuring interviews with many individuals influenced by Larson, deeply moved Banks. “I wore 10 at Nebraska because of Jordan,” Banks stated. “And I was emotional just watching the video, because just makes you think about your life.”

Larson, reflecting on her illustrious career, took pride in stepping out of her comfort zone. After winning a championship in Lincoln with the Cornhuskers, she explored the world, living in countries like Turkey and Russia. While she found these places challenging, she described the people as warm and expressed pride in her courage to leave Nebraska behind.

With the match loss and Salt Lake City’s win on Saturday night, Larson’s career concluded, highlighted by her remarkable 19-kill performance.
