In a captivating story that has drawn national attention, a young kangaroo named Chesney has gone missing from its home near Necedah, Wisconsin. The search for this elusive marsupial has become a community effort, involving both local residents and technology experts.
Owned by Debbie Marlund, Chesney is a 16-month-old kangaroo living at the Sunshine Farm Petting Zoo along with his brother Kenny and five labradors. Known for their visits to nursing homes and senior centers, Chesney and his brother are described as “home bodies” who enjoy ample outdoor time when the weather is warm, according to Marlund. “Chesney actually sleeps in bed with me every night,” she shared.
The adventurous kangaroo’s escape was prompted by an unfamiliar dog on Wednesday morning, causing Chesney to flee his outdoor enclosure. Despite several sightings near his home, efforts to recapture him have been unsuccessful so far.
The escape has gained widespread media coverage, reaching audiences as far as Seattle and even being featured in a British publication.
Determined to find Chesney, Marlund has been tirelessly searching, enlisting the help of friends and neighbors to cover local trails and roads. “I have been asking neighbors to let me go on their property and walk trails, walk paths, and get close to the vicinity,” Marlund explained.
Colton Johnson from Midwest Aerial Drone Services has joined the search, employing a drone equipped with a thermal camera. His experience with lost pets has proven valuable, although tracking a swift-moving kangaroo presents unique challenges. “It’s hard to keep up with him,” Johnson noted. “He slipped us last night, but we’re going to head back out there tonight and see if we can get eyes on him.”
The search effort has attracted a crowd, but Johnson advises against pursuing Chesney, as the presence of people could potentially drive him further into the woods. Marlund urges the community to remain vigilant and report any sightings. “He’s not going to come to a stranger, he’s too spooked,” she mentioned, emphasizing the importance of keeping an eye out while in the area.
