Economic Development Administration Official Visits SC Nexus Tech Hub
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Cristina Killingsworth, who currently serves as the Acting Assistant Secretary for Economic Development at the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA), conducted an official visit to the SC Nexus for Advanced Resilient Energy (SC Nexus) to engage with leaders and provide support to the Tech Hub, which serves regions in South Carolina and Georgia. This visit underscores the Biden-Harris Administration’s recognition of SC Nexus as an important coalition, led by the South Carolina Department of Commerce, officially designated as a Tech Hub in October 2023.
SC Nexus is positioned as a pivotal player in the global clean energy supply chain. During her visit, Killingsworth, along with the Tech Hubs Program leadership, focused on enhancing the strategic initiatives to boost the region as a leader in advanced energy. The emphasis was placed on cyber-secure grid resilience technologies and optimizing the clean energy supply chain by expanding pilot manufacturing capabilities, enhancing a grid testing facility, creating a comprehensive multi-modal grid operations center, and promoting careers in grid resilience technologies.
The Tech Hubs Program is a prominent initiative aimed at reinforcing U.S. leadership in sectors critical to national security. By designating SC Nexus as a Tech Hub, the EDA endorses the region’s aspirations to elevate its technological ecosystem and advance as a global leader in the clean energy supply chain, enhancing the United States’ competitive edge and national security over the next ten years.
“SC Nexus embodies the spirit and potential of the Tech Hubs Program to take centers of excellence and make them world-class tech ecosystems through targeted investments,” stated Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo. “That’s precisely why I’ve asked Cristina Killingsworth to travel to South Carolina with a team to meet with leadership and provide technical assistance on their strategy. The Tech Hubs Program is crucial to ensuring tech industries vital to U.S. economic and national security start, stay, and grow in the U.S., and that’s why I’m committed to future rounds of funding and working with lawmakers to support additional federal resources to support all of our designees.”
Authorized under the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act with a funding of $10 billion, the Tech Hubs Program is designed to accelerate the development and deployment of innovative technologies across the U.S., resulting in the creation of new companies and jobs.
