Telehealth Boosts Breast Cancer Survivors’ Follow-Up Care, Study Finds

Remote doctor visits offer more support to patients in remission

Remote Healthcare Enhances Follow-Up for Breast Cancer Survivors

In a significant development for breast cancer care, a recent study conducted by the University of Georgia’s College of Pharmacy indicates that telehealth services play a crucial role in helping survivors adhere to their follow-up treatment plans.

The research tracked 1,100 women diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018 over a span of five years. The analysis revealed that 58% of these women who utilized remote healthcare options were more consistent in following their prescribed treatment regimen.

Post-treatment, breast cancer survivors are often prescribed oral endocrine therapy to reduce the risk of recurrence. Despite the severe side effects associated with these medications, the study found that telehealth consultations provided essential support in managing these adverse effects effectively.

However, the cost of telehealth services is seen as a potential hurdle. The study noted that patients engaging in remote consultations incurred 15% higher out-of-pocket expenses compared to those who did not use these services.
