Nineteen-year-old Niko Bray was piloting a small single-engine aircraft with a passenger on a Friday afternoon when the plane lost power shortly after takeoff. With the aircraft just a few hundred feet above the ground, Bray had to act quickly.
“I knew I was only about 500 feet off the ground, so I knew I was going down for sure,” Bray stated.
Bray initially considered landing on a nearby coastal road but soon realized it was too narrow. He then opted for a broader road and prepared for an emergency landing amidst the afternoon traffic.
At this critical moment, a perceptive truck driver noticed the unfolding situation and took decisive action.
The driver decelerated and managed traffic, ensuring a clear path for the descending aircraft. This quick intervention allowed Bray to land safely, with no injuries reported.
The dramatic event occurred around 2:30 p.m., leading to multiple 911 calls from astonished onlookers. Emergency services responded promptly, although the scenario had already concluded optimally.
Bray experienced the emotional impact of the incident most profoundly when he reunited with his mother.
“Very grateful for her. She’s funded my dreams of becoming a pilot,” Bray expressed. “I’m glad to be able to hug her again, for sure.”
