Tragic Collision Claims Life of Athens Cyclist

A devastating incident unfolded on Olympic Drive over the weekend, leading to the death of a bicyclist from Athens. The cyclist was involved in a collision with a vehicle on Saturday evening.

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department is actively investigating the accident, which occurred on the westbound lane of Olympic Drive. The victim, aged 37, was riding an electric bike when they were rear-ended by a 2013 BMW sedan.

Emergency services, including National EMS, responded to the scene, providing initial treatment before transporting the injured cyclist to a local hospital. Despite medical efforts, the cyclist succumbed to their injuries on February 23.

Authorities have charged the driver of the BMW, a 45-year-old man from Athens, with multiple offenses, including DUI, Homicide by Vehicle, Following Too Closely, and Serious Injury by Vehicle.

This incident marks the second fatal crash in Athens-Clarke County for the year 2026.
