Reckitt to Establish $145.59M Mucinex Plant in Wilson, NC, Creating 289 Jobs

Governor Cooper Announces 200 New Jobs as Global Food Company Selects Johnston County for Production Facility

Reckitt, a global leader in health, hygiene, and nutrition, will establish a major production plant in Wilson County, North Carolina. The new facility will produce the over-the-counter medicine Mucinex and create 289 jobs, Governor Roy Cooper announced today. The project represents an investment of $145.59 million in Wilson. This development is part of North Carolina’s ongoing efforts to attract prominent life science companies to the state.

Reckitt, known for brands like Airborne, Biofreeze, Finish, Lysol, and Mucinex, plans to expand its production capacity and localize Mucinex production with the new Wilson facility. The plant will include various roles, such as quality assurance, quality control, engineering, and general manufacturing, in addition to management and administrative functions. The average salary for the new positions will be $80,182, significantly higher than Wilson County’s average wage of $52,619.

The North Carolina Department of Commerce led the support for Reckitt during its site evaluation process. The project will be facilitated by a Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG) approved by the state’s Economic Investment Committee. Over the 12-year term of this grant, the project is expected to grow the state’s economy by $1.9 billion. The JDIG agreement authorizes potential reimbursement to the company of up to $4,606,000, contingent upon performance verification.

Governor Cooper emphasized the state’s ability to provide skilled biotech workers, which is crucial for companies like Reckitt. Commerce Secretary Machelle Baker Sanders highlighted the significance of this investment, noting the growth of the life science industry in Wilson and the BioPharma Crescent region. Local leaders, including N.C. Senator Buck Newton and N.C. Representative Ken Fontenot, expressed their support and optimism for the project’s impact on the region.
