State Initiative Provides Financial Boost to Nebraska Manufacturers
Nebraska’s manufacturing sector is set to receive a significant boost from a new pilot program initiated by the Nebraska Department of Labor. This program allocates $250,000 in grants aimed at enhancing the technological capabilities and workforce development of local manufacturers.
Earlier this week, the department revealed the selection of five companies to benefit from this manufacturing modernization and workforce development grant. These businesses will each receive matching grants of up to $50,000. The funds are intended to assist in the adoption of advanced technologies, thereby boosting productivity and competitive edge.
Commissioner of Labor Katie Thurber expressed her admiration for the initiative, stating, “I am so impressed with the commitment from businesses across the state to utilizing technology in ways that will grow and sustain their companies while also providing new employment opportunities.”
Among the beneficiaries, Distar Industries in Columbus plans to enhance its operations by incorporating robotic welding systems, allowing workers to concentrate on more intricate projects.
Aurora Boardworks, based in Aurora and specializing in custom electronic printed circuit boards, intends to acquire a 3-D solder paste inspection machine and a 3-D automated optical inspection machine. This move is part of their strategy to meet growing customer demand, which also includes hiring two additional employees.
FabriPlas Metal, located in Bennet, which manufactures decorative deck panels and ornamental fencing, will utilize the grant to construct a plasma cutting machine. The company also plans to employ an administrative assistant and a painter/welder.
Lincoln Tool and Design Co. in Lincoln is set to add a robotic welding cell to enhance and modernize their welding operations. The company anticipates this upgrade will lead to a revenue increase between $50,000 and $250,000.
In Lincoln, Saro Cider will be installing a tunnel pasteurizer for their canned beverages. This new equipment is expected to accelerate packaging speeds, improve product quality, and increase production capacity.
The application criteria for the grant required businesses to have been operational for at least three years, derive 51% of their revenue from manufactured goods, and employ a minimum of three full-time staff. The department reported receiving 54 applications for the program.
