ASAP Rocky Supports Harlem Tenants by Covering Rent

Rapper ASAP Rocky transformed a cherished personal memory into a significant act of kindness for the residents of a Harlem apartment building.

During a recent appearance on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, following the release of his latest album, the Harlem native discussed his motivation for this charitable deed.
Rocky recounted his childhood experiences living in the homeless shelter system with his family, which significantly influenced his views on community and giving back.
“Well, some people might not know much about my early days, my past and my background. So I grew up in the homeless shelter system. Me and my family,” Rocky revealed to Fallon. He expressed his preference for discretion in his philanthropic efforts, stating, “And for me, when I look online and stuff and I see TikToks of people doing things like donating to homeless people, it’s usually with a camera there. And for me, that’s a little pretentious.”
He elaborated on the discomfort recipients might feel when filmed, saying, “So I wanted to do something that felt like giving back, but without trying to be too much, like, flashy about it.”
Rocky partnered with Bilt to cover the rent for all tenants in the building where his grandmother once lived and where he spent part of his childhood.
The rapper also reminisced about a defining moment from his youth at a Volunteers of America shelter.
“This particular weekend, Harry Potter had came out. I’m a huge Harry Potter fan, right?” he shared. “And so I couldn’t afford to go see the movie, obviously, due to circumstances at the time.”
He fondly remembered a woman who unexpectedly took around ten children from the shelter to see the film, each accompanied by an adult who paid for their entry.
Initially assuming she was affluent, Rocky learned otherwise. She clarified that she was a substitute teacher struggling to “make ends meet” herself. Curious, Rocky asked, “‘So why would you take your little bit of money to take me to the movie theater and stuff like that?'”
Her response left a lasting impact on him.
“She was like, ‘Because it just feels great to do something like that, you know?’ And I was just like, ‘People do that?'”
When asked by Fallon if he had ever encountered the woman again, Rocky admitted he hadn’t but wanted to extend his gratitude regardless. “I don’t even know the lady’s name, but God bless you. Thank you so much.”
