In a remarkable twist of fate, a 66-year-old hiker named Graham Garnett has been discovered alive after vanishing for nearly three weeks in New Zealand’s Kahurangi National Park. His unexpected survival is being hailed by authorities as extraordinary.

Garnett embarked on a solo hiking expedition on December 30 but failed to return as planned, prompting an extensive search operation. Adverse weather conditions, including heavy cloud cover, led to his disorientation and a wrong turn that took him off the intended path.
Despite the deployment of helicopters, specialized teams, and advanced radar technology over subsequent weeks, searchers found no trace of Garnett. Eventually, police made the difficult decision to suspend the search.
Unknown to the search teams, Garnett was persistently trying to navigate his way out, despite suffering injuries. Following natural landmarks like streams and ridgelines, he eventually identified a river that guided him to Venus Hut, a secluded shelter within the park, where he arrived just before being found.
On a Friday afternoon, at approximately 2:30 p.m., contractors working nearby discovered Garnett alive at the hut. He was quickly transported to a hospital and later reunited with his family. The family expressed immense gratitude for the widespread support and search efforts.
“We want to acknowledge the time and effort put in by the NZ Police and Land Search and Rescue, including searchers on the ground, in the rivers and in the air,” the family said in a statement. “We are also deeply thankful to those who joined two private searches. Your professionalism, compassion and expertise were exemplary. To those who helped us in the field by providing radios, freeze-dried meals and specialist searching skills and equipment, we are truly grateful.”
The police have applauded Garnett’s incredible resilience and luck in enduring such challenging circumstances. Sergeant Jonny Evans expressed joy at the outcome, stating, “This is an amazing result. We are so pleased for Graham and his loved ones. He’s extremely lucky to be alive.”
