UGA hosts 22nd annual MLK Jr. Freedom Breakfast

The University of Georgia Celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. at Annual Freedom Breakfast

The University of Georgia recently held its 22nd annual Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Breakfast, drawing hundreds to the event. This year, the keynote address was delivered by Jay Bailey, a prominent UGA alum and the current president and CEO of the H.J. Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs (RICE).

Reflecting on societal progress, Bailey noted, “It’s hard to believe that less than 70 years ago, this was impossible, for you and I to even be having this conversation.” He emphasized the significance of the university’s leadership honoring Dr. King’s legacy, highlighting the remarkable strides made since the era when King himself could not have been admitted to UGA.

UGA student Baylen Howell, who introduced Bailey, underscored the importance of personal impact in continuing Dr. King’s work. Howell stated, “Going off of what we just heard from Mr. Jay Bailey, I think the most important thing is impacting what you can. You know, what you can change. You can change what’s three feet in front of you, what’s three feet around you and I feel like that’s where it starts.”

As part of the event, the 2026 President’s Fulfilling the Dream Awards were distributed. Among this year’s honorees was third-year foundation fellow Jhaycee Barnes. Barnes expressed the value of community, saying, “Along with my mentorship work in general, I think that community is super important as MLK spoke about and I think kind of fostering that community here in Athens and at UGA is extremely important.”

The theme for this year’s gathering was “The Power of the Dream,” celebrating the enduring influence of Dr. King’s vision.
