U.S. Department of Commerce’s Tech Hubs Program Director Visits Baltimore Tech Hub
Eric Smith, the Director of the Tech Hubs Program, visited the Baltimore Tech Hub in Maryland, as announced by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA). The Baltimore Tech Hub, a coalition led by the Greater Baltimore Committee, was designated as a Regional Technology and Innovation Hub (Tech Hub) by the Biden-Harris Administration in October 2023.
Recognized for its role as an international leader in innovative predictive healthcare technologies, the Baltimore Tech Hub aims to strengthen its strategy during the visit. The Tech Hubs program aims to work alongside the Baltimore Tech Hub, to enhance the delivery of precise and predictive medicine which can improve health outcomes and increase longevity. The goal is to develop and distribute products and services that are closely tailored to each person’s unique genome, environment, and history.
The Tech Hubs Program, a flagship initiative of the EDA, focuses on advancing U.S. leadership in technologies and industries that are critical to national security. The Baltimore Tech Hub’s designation signifies a strong endorsement of the region’s plan to supercharge its critical technology ecosystem and become a global leader in predictive healthcare over the next decade. This aligns with the U.S. goals of advancing national security and global competitiveness.
Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo expressed her belief in the Tech Hubs program’s potential to transform centers of excellence into world-class tech ecosystems through targeted investments. Raimondo sent Smith and a team to Maryland to meet with Baltimore Tech Hub leadership and provide technical assistance on their strategy. The Secretary reinforced her commitment to future funding rounds and working with lawmakers to secure additional federal resources for the program.
